A slogan is an attention-getting word or phrase used to publicize something, draw attention to a campaign, or use it as a rallying cry. It is often a catchy phrase that summarizes a brand’s or organization’s core values and mission. Other words used are catchphrase, motto, tagline, and shibboleth.
I italicized shibboleth because Masons recognize the word from a story told during one of the ritual lectures.
The Book of Judges 12: 5-6 story is when Jephthah gathered the men of Gilead and battled and defeated the Ephraimites. Jephthah had captured the shallow crossings of the Jordan River, and when an Ephraimite fugitive attempted to cross, they were challenged by a demand to say the word shibboleth. Being from Ephraim, the fugitive would say sibboleth, and the incorrect pronunciation would reveal him as an enemy, and he would be killed.
A shibboleth is any custom or tradition, usually a phrase or single word, distinguishing one group of people from another. Shibboleths have been used for centuries as passwords, to establish identity, a sign of loyalty or devotion, and for protection from real or perceived threats.
Also, a shibboleth can identify individuals as part of a group, not based on their ability to pronounce one or more words, but on their ability to recognize a more profound message from the words spoken. A good example is the phrase “a friend of Bill W.,” used by members of Alcoholics Anonymous, which only has a deeper meaning for them.
MWB Carter’s shibboleth is a call to action for Freemasons. A call that embodies all we have learned from Masonry to improve ourselves and our world.
Becoming legendary starts with a commitment to a purpose that resonates with others, involves extraordinary actions, and generates inspiring stories that motivate others to act in the same manner.
Characteristics of a Masonic Legend
- A mindset of humility, authenticity, kindness, and servanthood: Being a man of Masonic principles and treating others with respect can elevate a Mason’s status to legendary. You will be remembered not for your titles but for the way you loved others.
- Extraordinary Actions: Legends are typically known for significant accomplishments that benefit Freemasonry and separate them from the average brother. These actions are taken without the expectation of reward.
- Inspiration and Impact: A legend creates a narrative that inspires others. Their life story often motivates future Masonic generations, encouraging them to pursue their dreams and goals.
How to Be Legendary
- Make the Decision and Embrace Excellence: The first step is a conscious choice to live your life as a Mason and aspire to legendary status. This decision creates a positive mindset and dictates your actions.
- Start Small and Build: Engage in your lodge and community. Volunteering for what needs to be done will help you gain experience and build your reputation over time.
- Pursue Mastery: As you gain experience, strive for excellence in our craft. This involves continuous learning and improvement, ultimately leading to mastery, where you become a valued mentor for information and advice.
- Embrace Challenges: Viewing obstacles as opportunities for growth can enhance your resilience and determination, qualities often associated with legends.
- Leave a Legacy: Become a mentor and strive to create Masons who will have an impact that transcends your lifetime. This ensures that your contributions are remembered long after you are gone.
Our legends, as Masons, will be of our making, and I would suggest they should be built with care so as not to spoil the working tools given to us.
We were instructed to be legendary when we were presented with our Masonic aprons. We were told the white, spotless apron was:
“an ever-present reminder of a purity of life and rectitude of conduct.”
“a never-ending argument for nobler deeds, for higher thoughts, for greater achievements.”
Finally, the apron was given to us with the hope that our life, our legend, would be as “pure and spotless” as the apron itself.
Be Legendary – Be a Mason!
Have a Great Masonic Day!
