Are Your Organization’s Rules Holding People’s Minds Hostage?

We all know that rules are necessary for the effective operation of an organization. Rules provide uniformity to processes and procedures so that things get done in an orderly fashion. Without them there are certain people who without hesitation would just do what they want.brain.chain3

So when are rules a detriment to the organization?

It’s usually when a rule becomes something that is done repeatedly, without question and has gone on so long that people cannot even explain how it got started, why it’s done, and what its purpose or value is. I call this a blahcess because it draws organizational members into the trap of not using their imagination or creativity.

Your organization’s rules are probably holding people hostage if you hear these statements:

…”Gee, I never thought of that.”
…”I didn’t think about doing it that way.”
…”Are you sure we can do that?”
…”We’ve never done it that way before.”
…”I’m sorry, I wasn’t thinking.”
…”I didn’t think that applied to me.”
…”Where is that in the employee manual?”

Do something about it. Start to create an atmosphere where open constructive dialogue is welcome and expected. Don’t let your rules hold creative and innovative minds hostage.

Have a Great Blahless Day!
